For the first time, I've been victim to an application wreaking havoc on my device.

I've been using YouMail for a while now ... probably 2 years at this point. I recently started using the handheld app, and last week upgraded to the newest version available (0.96.1) ... and it was a horrible decision.

It took me 5 days to figure out what the heck was going on ... and once I removed the app all was well.

Symptoms:
  1. Device running slow
  2. Device VERY hot. Got as hot as 42°C, averaging around 38°C. (typically my device idles at 22°C and 26°C when being charged)
  3. Horrible battery life (device died overnight after being fully charged and I missed my alarm twice; one time in me almost missing a flight)
  4. Me freaking out

The thing that I would have thought to be a symptom but wasn't was the CPU on my device wasn't spiking. It was idle ... doing nothing.

I figured it was any one of the following:
  • The device was hosed (~16 months old)
  • The OS was hosed (4.6.0.301)
  • The battery was hosed (Original one, and ordered a replacement ... which I now don't need)
  • The chargers I use were busted (hey it has happened elsewhere for me)

... but never thought an app would actually cripple my device ... yeah, I was dead wrong.

So now, a day after removing YouMail .96.1 my device is happy. Lesson learned: Remember a BlackBerry is just a computer with cellular capability ... if Windows XP can get hosed by bad software, so can my BlackBerry.
