Welcome to Part 13 of the 20 part series looking at the BES logs (Part 12) ... the BlackBerry Synchronization Service (SYNC) log.

The SYNC log isn't much more useful on its own than the DISP log ... At least the majority of the log is in plain writing ... nonetheless I rarely bother opening it up.

The most value from the SYNC comes from using one of the BlackBerry Resource Kit (BRK) Tools, as the BRK will provide you with usable output

I honestly can't remember the last time I actually went drudging through this log file ... but here are a few snips of things you'll see:

[46031] (06/01 11:17:30):{0x78C} [SYNC-DSession] Submit XML request to Backup connector. [User2, Test:5]
[46031] (06/01 11:26:29):{0xFE8} [SYNC-DSession] Submit XML request to Exchange connector. [User3, Test:20]
[46031] (06/01 12:01:46):{0xF78} [SYNC-DSession] Submit XML request to DevMgmt connector. [User4, Test:4]

Yup, that's right ... Backup Connector, Exchange Connector, Device Management Connector ... all other log files you'll see on the BES. You'll use the SYNC log to correlate data with these other logs if you need to do some troubleshooting.

Here's a snip from the Automatic Wireless Backup functionality ...

Much like the BlackBerry Dispatcher please don't underestimate the importance of the BlackBerry Synchronization Service ... just don't bother spending too much time in it; it isn't a wealth of knowledge without some other supporting logs.

If you've got any questions about other specific entries in the SYNC log feel free to post a question / comment in response to this post, or in the forum.

Tomorrow in Part 14 we'll go over the Phone Call / PIN / SMS logs ... all CSV files!
