Welcome to Part 17 of the 20 part series looking at the BES logs (Part 16) ... the BRK Tool BBCheck.exe (and BBCheckCmd.exe).

The wonderful secretive tool that I first stumbled upon a few years ago from a friend of a co-worker of a friend of a cousin ... well you get the point ...

Finally included in the 4.1 SP6 BRK release BBCheck.exe (GUI) and BBCheckCmd.exe (command-line version) is one of the few tools that actually generates log data and doesn't read from the already existing logs.

Officially called the BlackBerry System Requirements Tool, BBCheck creates a simple text output from a series of tests that it runs.

Focused specifically on BES for Exchange (Domino gets no love in 5.0 version either) BBCheck by default will review the following information on the system it is run:
  • General Information
  • BES Information
  • Service Account
  • Exchange Permissions
  • MAPI Subsystem
  • GC
  • Database
  • DB BES Instance Versions
  • Java
  • .NET Framework
  • MSMQ
  • Network
  • SRP Connectivity
  • System Information
  • System Hotfixes
  • Current Processes
... and a screenshot of the tool:

The application will run on a PC; give it a test if you'd like. The thing I like most about this application is that it is a quick way to give you a snapshot of some critical information. Much like many PC Spyware/Adware troubleshooting forums ask for people to post a HijackThis log, a BBCheck log could prove to be quite valuable in some initial troubleshooting where an administrator might not know too much about their environment.

Give it a try, go download it!

If you've got any questions about the BBCheck tool feel free to post a question / comment in response to this post, or in the forum.

Tomorrow and the day after we'll hit 2 more tools (MAPICdoErrors and MessageFlow) from the BRK and then we'll wrap up this series.

If you've got any feedback or ideas for what you'd like to see more on please drop me a line.
