HOWTO: Identify the version of BES you're running

Posted 07-17-2009 at 04:00 AM by hdawg

One thing that always plagues me when I work with customers is finding out the exact version of BES (Service Pack, Maintenance Release, and Hotfix too) that is running on any given server. I don't like asking people to go through logs or open up the application to try and find a value that may / may not match somewhere else that I'm tracking information.

I've found the best way is to:

1) Go to the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel applet (Start > Run > appwiz.cpl <enter>)

2) Locate the reference to BlackBerry Enterprise Server, select it and then click Click here for support information.

3) The publisher listed should be Research In Motion and the Version will be the exact version of BES currently installed.

For example: 5.0.0 MR1 (Bundle 236). The Bundle is a key part of that data as it'll identify the MR & HF. 5.0 is the BES Version and .0 is Service Pack 0 ... RIM was nice enough to also include MR1 in the name too. ... but if there were a hotfix applied you'd most likely not see it. The best way to confirm the exact version is through the release notes for that specific version as it'll include the bundle number.

Here are a few KB's from RIM which aren't particularly useful with this method, but are if you just go fishing around for application version:

Versions of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise
KB17611 - Bundle versions of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange
