I've mentioned before about BlackBerry KB's that seem to keep doing the rounds as they get tweaked and updated for newer versions of BES or simply new fixes to old problems.

Again, the illusive 'Mr E' has posted updates for one such KB, this time dealing with the notorious One Way Calendar Sync

Any BES veteran is likely to have come across this one and I'm certainly no stranger to it on a few different versions of BES now!

Have you been hit by this one in the past? If so share your experiences with your Port3101 peers!!

REVIEW: Gwabbit

I'm a fan of any application which makes my day easier; turning my phone in to a light sabre or lighter does not make my life easier, applications...

I'm a fan of any application which makes my day easier; turning my phone in to a light sabre or lighter does not make my life easier, applications which integrate seemlessly with existing platforms on the other hand makes a massive difference to my working day. Gwabbit is exacly that sort of application.

For those unfamiliar with Gwabbit, here's a brief introduction taken directly from their website:

Quote:

gwabbit automatically scans incoming BlackBerry emails, finds contacts, and instantly transforms them into contact records within your address book with a mouse click! gwabbit puts your contact fields away in their proper place in the address book and even checks your address book to see if you've already saved a contact previously before re-prompting you to "gwab" it again.

gwabbit employs a remarkable patent-pending semantic technology to identify contact blocks within email text and accurately parse and import them into your address book. No more cutting and pasting contacts one field at a time from your emails into your address book.

That really says it all!! When I first came across Gwabbit I was browsing the BlackBerry App World on my Bold 9000 device, and as a free 14 day trial was available, I had to give it a download. I have to say, I was impressed and within a few minutes I was convinced this was an app I had to have. To give you a feel for how the application works, I've screen dumped the process of using Gwabbit below:

1. I receive an email on my device where the sender has a signature. I click the menu key and from the sub menu you'll note the option "gwabbit"

2. I then get a brief 'processing' screen as Gwabbit scans the email

3. A prompt for the new contact will then be displayed with an option to add the contact to your address book. Click 'Create New'

4. Again, a brief buffer screen appears

5. You will now be shown your address book with the new contact created in the 'Edit' view so you may make any additions or changes

And here's the saved contact on my device:

6. And as we can see, here is the contact in my Outlook address book

The two key things to take from Gwabbit are the fact it integrates in the BlackBerry OS rather than having to be something which requires separate launching (and that's a massive positive for me), and secondly this application is very accurate - I've yet to correct it on anything.

At under $10 a year this is a steal for anyone looking to save some time and have that bit more integration on their device. Before this I was always cutting and pasting in Outlook or typing in stuff from business cards, and now I can do it all quickly and accurately from my BlackBerry in seconds.

Gwabbit is available directly from their site and can be downloaded OTA. Here's a link to their website:

gwabbit - an Add-in for Microsoft Outlook and the BlackBerry that finds, gwabs and adds contacts from your emails to your address book

I have also checked, and the 14 day free trial is still available, so what are you waiting for!!!!

I was doing my usual scan of newly released BlackBerry KB articles over the weekend and one familiar article popped up, KB01608 - Transaction error - decryption error

This KB has been rolling around in one form or another for years, and yet again it seems to have received a minor update and been spat out once more.

I highlight this article not just because of my familiarity with it, but because it's one of the more common issues I've come across in recent years.

In its current incarnation, KB01608 lists ten potential culprits for the user that's called you and said "I can't send any email...it just comes up with a red 'X'!!!" Get the user to open the failed message, scroll up above the subject line to the 'Message Status' field and there you'll see 'Transaction error - decryption error' at which point, reach for that KB!!!

Here is RIM's top 10 on this issue:

The encryption key on the BlackBerry smartphone has not been updated.

BlackBerry® Desktop Redirector is running on more than one computer.

A conflict exists because your BlackBerry smartphone was previously associated with another account.

The encryption keys on the BlackBerry smartphone and the Microsoft Exchange Server are not identical.

The BlackBerry smartphone information stored for your account is corrupt.

A duplicate of your BlackBerry smartphone personal identification number (PIN) is registered on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

The Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile is corrupt.

The current encryption key is corrupt either on the BlackBerry smartphone or in the Microsoft® Outlook® mailbox.

The encryption key has not been correctly transferred to the BlackBerry smartphone.

Cached Exchange Mode is turned on in Microsoft Outlook 2003 and it has caused the encryption key to be saved in the wrong location.

In the majority of cases where I've come across this issue, it tends to be cause 4 and (more often than not) cause 7.

Have you had this problem? Let us know how you fixed it in the blog or in the BES Admin Bar & Grill

I wanted to bring your attention to a RIM KB article that Mr. E posted up a week ago - how to migrate from Exchange Server 5.5 to 2007 (with hopefully minimal impact on BES).

I was chatting with a client a week ago who is going through a big network upgrade. It started with a need to move from BES 4.0 to 5.0 as users are looking for the ability to access network files and folders, which we all know BES 5.0 accommodates (or at least will accommodate when handheld code 5.0 launches). The client in question still runs Exchange Server 5.5 and so their upgrades will need to factor in Exchange as well as BES. I've had a few people move from Exchange 2003 to 2007, but this was the first conversation I'd had where someone needed to go from 5.5 to 2007.

I'm guessing there are a few Exchange dinosaurs out there that will need to make that step up soon - let’s face it, support for Exchange 5.5 ended 31st December 2003 and those who paid for extended support had it until 31st December 2005! I thought it was a topic worth highlighting as there will be a few moves from 5.5 to 2007 where BES 5.0 will have been (or will be) the catalyst for such a move.

The KB can be located here - if you've made the move do share your experiences with us!!

Just to inform you all, there has been an outage this morning affecting BlackBerry services in the UK. At the moment I'm not sure if this issue also impacted other parts of Europe, but what I know is that both BIS and BES services went down, and I've had this confirmed by 2 UK carriers this morning. From our systems it looks like things went offline just before 08.00 GMT and were down for about 25-35 minutes maximum by my estimation.

Anyone continuing to experience issues now should not attribute it to this morning's outage.
